Friday, 12. April 2019, The Fletcher School, Beyond African Orality: Ajami Traditions of Muslim Africa

To celebrate Black History Month, this talk by Dr. Fallou Ngom (Professor of Anthropology and Director of the African Studies Center at Boston University) will discuss West Africa's influences on the spiritual, cultural and intellectual traditions of upon his book "Muslims Beyond the Arab World: The Odyssey of Ajami and Muridiyya," Dr. Ngom will demonstrate how 'Ajami materials serve as essential resources of indigenous religious, socio-cultural, and historical knowledge necessary for understanding the spread of Islam and its many adaptations in sub-Saharan Africa and the Muslim world at large. Lunch will be served.
