Thursday, 19. January 2017, Seattle, Briefing on U District Rezone

The Seattle City Council Planning, Land Use, and Zoning Committee is set to be briefed on the U District rezone—the first zoning change in Seattle that would activate the City's new Mandatory Housing Affordability (MHA) program—a final time on January 6th before the Committee votes in late January, possibly the 19th. Strong supportive turnout at the briefing will set the stage for a YES vote on January 19th.

Join us in helping push this groundbreaking rezone across the finish line to activate MHA by attending and speaking at the January 6th briefing! #HALAyes

Background:

MHA is the centerpiece of the Housing Affordability and Livability Agenda and will require developers to contribute to the city’s stock of affordable housing by either including rent-restricted homes in their projects or paying into a fund the City will use to build them across the city. Combined with rezones in all of Seattle's urban centers and villages, MHA will harness Seattle's rapid growth to create over 6,000 new affordable housing units.

Since 2011, the City of Seattle has been working with the community to develop plans to coordinate zoning changes that will create affordable housing with investments in things like social services, parks, sidewalks, and bike lanes to make U District a better place to live. The U District plan focuses on increasing housing and employment opportunities to make the most of the U District Link light rail station that's coming in 2021.
