Sunday, 24. March 2019, Alhamra Art Center, Marbling Workshop

The art of marbling, called Ebru in Turkish, is an art that is practiced in many cultures from Japan to Europe for centuries. Many believe it was invented in the thirteenth century Turkistan and then spread to China, India and Persia and Anatolia. Seljuk and Ottoman calligraphers and artists used marbling to decorate books, imperial decrees, official correspondence and documents. New forms and techniques were perfected in the process and Turkey remained the center of marbling for many centuries. Calligraphers of the Muslim world have long used it for background paper and for margins in calligraphic pieces. It is produced by floating pigments on water and lifting the designs produced onto paper.  Essentially a printing technique, the designs produced in ebru vary greatly.
