The Wisconsin Marine Historical Society is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary on Thursday, May 16. Everyone is invited to the Gala at the Town Club in Fox Point, Wis.The Society was organized in January of 1959 by a group of Milwaukee civic and business leaders. Its mission is to "promote interest in discovering, collecting, recording and preserving" material and lore about the state's marine history and the commerce and industry of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.To celebrate its founding, the Society is sponsoring a dinner and program, featuring bestselling author and humorist Michael Perry and Paula Kiely, director of the Milwaukee Public Library, at the Town Club, 7950 N. Santa Monica Blvd. Ms. Kiely will emcee the program. Everyone attending the dinner will receive a box of tasty, handcrafted chocolates as a special gift from the Society. A harpist will entertain guests. The Gala will begin at 6 p.m. with hors d' SpeakersMichael Perry is a New York Times bestselling author, humorist, playwright, and radio show host from New Auburn, bestselling memoirs include Population: 485 (recently adapted for the stage), Truck: A Love Story, Coop, Visiting Tom, and Montaigne in Barn Boots: An Amateur Ambles Through Philosophy. Among his other dozen titles are The Scavengers (for young readers) and his novel The Jesus on a small dairy farm, Perry put himself through nursing school while working on a ranch in Wyoming, then detoured into writing. He lives with his wife and two daughters in rural Wisconsin, where he serves on the local volunteer fire and rescue service and is an intermittent pig farmer. He hosts the nationally syndicated “Tent Show Radio,” performs widely as a humorist, and tours with his band the Long Kiely was appointed director of the Milwaukee Public Library in 2006 by Mayor Tom Barrett. A Milwaukee native, she joined the library in 1995, serving as children's librarian, children's services coordinator and deputy city librarian.She holds a bachelor of fine arts and a master of library and information studies degrees from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Business Journal selected her as one of its 2011 Women of Influence. In 2002 she was honored as UWM's School of Information Studies Graduate of the Decade.Ms. Kiely has been directly involved in the city's effort to rebuild branch libraries through mixed-used development, a strategy for living spaces that blend with library services.

Tickets are refundable until 9 a.m. May 1.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No tickets are being issued. Just bring a driver's license or other ID to claim your seat at the dinner and program.
