Saturday, 22. June 2019, MakeATX, XO Stitch Club : Sashiko Decorative Mending

Sashiko is a traditional mending stitch technique developed in Japan that is both decorative and utilitarian. It is meditative and mindful hand stitch practice, allowing us to connect with the Slow Fashion movement through creative, thoughtful repair, using reinforcing stitches to layer fabric, mend holes and tears, to strengthen and prolong the life of garments. The stitches take on aspects of decorative embroidery through repeating geometric patterns.
In the workshop we'll go over some stitch patterns, then I will work with you to design your individual mend for a pair of jeans or other garment, or you can practice on stitch samplers.
Learn: basics of Sashiko stitches for mending, how to create your own patterns, materials and mending techniques.
Bring: something you want to mend (jeans, denim jacket, heavier shirt, etc. are good items to start with).
I will provide: Scraps of denim, linen, and other special pieces to create patches and all the tools and supplies you need.
You'll go home with: a Sashiko mending kit including a variety of sashiko and other specialty mending threads, needles, a darning mushroom, pattern instruction.
*No prior experience necessary. Beginners welcome!*
