Saturday, 21. January 2017, Chicago, Youth Voice and Vision with Free Spirit Media: A Screening

Youth Voice and Vision with Free Spirit Media, presented by WTTW - Chicago PBS in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events at the Chicago Cultural Center, is a FREE opportunity to see the critical work being produced by the young film makers of Free Spirit Media. We will screen two films produced by the Free Spirit PRO team followed by a discussion with the young creatives on the impact of their pieces. The event will be followed by a networking reception, and refreshments will be provided.

This event is FREE. RSVP on Eventbrite to reserve your spot:

Nia & Kim - Nia is a high school senior only months away from graduation. A bright student, she dreams of attending college and having a successful career. Nia’s mother, Kim, a teacher at an alternative school and single mom, could not be more proud of her daughter. A few months ago, they were evicted from their Section 8 housing and are currently homeless. Nia and Kim is a short documentary portrait of a mother and daughter facing hard times, but persevering to overcome the obstacles in their way.

Ubuntu: The Peace Exchange - "I am what I am, because of who we all are." As part of the Peace Exchange leadership program, Peace Builders from Chicago traveled to South Africa in the summer of 2016, 22 years after the end of apartheid. The six young Chicagoans were welcomed by the Johannesburg Genocide & Holocaust Centre, explored solutions to inadequate housing with Start Living Green, lead an art therapy project for children with Lefika La Phodiso, and facilitated youth peace circles with Imagine Scholar.

A Tale of Two Cities: North Lawndale Chicago - A response to the documentary Romeo Is Bleeding, which tells the story of youth in Richmond, CA who process violence in their community through poetry, this film is a thoughtful video about community and the misrepresentation of certain communities in the media such as Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood. The piece reflects on the city's West Side as told by the young adults who live and work there.
